Tripod Fish (Bathypterois spp.)

Tripod Fish (Bathypterois spp.)

This tripod fish was seen on one of the dives of the NOAA research vessel, Okeanos Explorer. This particular fish, Bathypterois spp., has extremely primitive eyes and uses modified fins to find prey. They perch motionless on the sea floor waiting for the current to bring along something to eat. These dives are unique in that they can be watched live by the public - tune in to explore the deep oceans in real-time.
