Spicoli Drawing
Spicoli is one of my favorite sharks in the California White Shark Project catalog. We first encountered her in 2017 off Tomales Point, and what impressed us about her was her demeanor. Most younger, smaller sharks act their age – a little impulsive, impatient, and brash. But Spicoli was different. For a 9.5’ shark, she swam with the calm, laid back confidence of a 17 footer. She was so calm and cool that we decided to name her Spicoli, after Sean Penn’s character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. During one of her slow, composed circles around our boat, she swam close enough that we made eye contact. It was the first time a white shark – one of my favorite creatures ever – realized I existed, and it is a moment I’ll never forget.
